Better Binding

Straight-grain binding or bias binding?  How do you cut those anyway?
Single-fold or double-fold binding?  What's the difference?
Flange binding or no flange binding?  What's the point?
Why miter the corners?  Why aren't mine square?
My quilt judge said to "fill" the binding...what does that mean?
Hand stitched binding or machine stitched binding...does it matter?

So many questions for the last finishing step of your quilt!

In this class, we will answer these questions, and learn to make binding.
We will cover:

  • Choosing your fabric
  • The pros and cons of both straight and bias binding
  • Binding Math
  • Practice sewing both bindings together
  • Discuss binding widths
  • Discuss what a flange is and how to use it
  • Discuss how to sew the binding to the quilt
  • Practice "filling" the binding and mitering the corners
  • Discuss techniques for keeping the binding straight, even, and square
  • Discuss alternative binding methods

This class will require you to prequilt several pieces of fabric.  We will then cut them apart to create several pieces to practice our binding on.  The point of the class will be to repeat several of the techniques, to give attendees a firm grasp on how to bind. I recommend at least 4 placemat sized-pieces.  This can easily be done by choosing a yard of 2 of your favorite fabrics (plus a layer of batting) and quilting simple straight lines or cross-hatching across it.  Then cut it to into 12x18 rectangles.  Select a yard of coordinating fabric and bring it uncut to the class.  Alternatively, you could bring several fat quarters.  Using this method, you will leave class with finished placemats.
